Sis, let’s be real Atonement doesn’t get talked about much.
And I’ll be the first to say that keeping feast days as a single woman can feel a little difficult, especially if you don’t have family or friends to congregate with.
But here’s the beautiful truth: you don’t necessarily need a congregation to keep Atonement.
This holy day is about humbling ourselves before YHWH, seeking His forgiveness, and walking in renewal.
What is the feast of Atonement?
The Feast of Atonement also known as Yom Kippur is a solemn day of fasting, prayer, and repentance.
YHWH commanded Israel to keep this day in Leviticus 23:27–32.
It’s not about food, fellowship, or celebration.
It’s about drawing closer to YHWH with a humbled and repentant heart.
The Spiritual Meaning
Atonement is about cleansing your spirit and realigning with YHWH.
It’s a day to examine your heart your burdens, mistakes, and past sins.
Think of it as a spiritual reset. A time to take inventory of the past year and lay your struggles, regrets, and doubts at His feet.
It’s not about condemnation. It’s about grace, renewal, and repentance.
How to Keep Feast of Atonement
(with or without a congregation)
Here are some practical ways to observe:
- Prepare your heart. Spend time in prayer the night before. Write out prayers of repentance or scriptures.
- Fast. Traditionally sunset to sunset without food or drink. But if you have health concerns or take medication, seek YHWH and do what you can.
- Unplug. Limit distractions step away from social media, TV, and unnecessary conversations.
- Read Scripture + Pray. Suggested readings:

- Alone or with others. If you’re keeping it alone, make it a personal retreat with YHWH. If you have friends or a congregation, join in prayer and fasting together.
Practical Tips
- Set aside a quiet space for prayer & journaling.
- Prepare your body for the fast (eat light meals beforehand).
- Have water or light food ready to break the fast when it ends.
- Journal reflections on what YHWH shows you during the day.
Encouragement for Singles
Sis, it’s okay if you’re keeping it alone.
You’re not “missing out.”
YHWH meets you in the secret place.
Your obedience to His Word is worship in itself.
This season of singleness gives you the gift of deep intimacy with Him without distraction.
Final Encouragement
Atonement is about renewal.
It’s stepping into the new cleansed, covered, and aligned with YHWH’s will.
Your sacrifice delights Him.
So don’t see this as punishment, but as a privilege to draw closer.
